The Granary | Coming Soon
Architect: Thames Architecture
Location: Wiltshire
Completion: Due Autumn 2026
The Granary was in a state of disrepair when this project first began, and it has taken considerable time, care, and attention to sensitively bring her back to life. Just shy of being a pile of rubble, to see its potential in those early days, our client needed a good imagination and a clear vision for what it could become.
A constantly evolving scheme, The Granary has never been the kind of property we could neatly draw up and get straight to work on. As work progressed, we encountered a few surprises on the way, from concealed joints to rotting beams, but that’s all part of the beauty of this project; we never know what to expect. Throughout the build, we’ve worked closely with our clients to adapt, refine, and evolve the design in response to each challenge along the way.
As anyone who has watched Grand Designs will know, projects rarely run exactly to schedule, and this one has been no exception. Fortunately, our clients have been wonderfully flexible with timings, allowing the process to unfold at the right pace, without rushing key decisions or the skilled trades bringing the building back together.
Once complete, The Granary will be a three-bedroom home with an annexe and workspace, alongside an upstairs study that could also serve as an additional bedroom. The building is full of drama and volume, with double-height spaces and vaulted ceilings throughout, with only the kitchen sitting beneath a flat ceiling. Crittall-style doors, oak internal doors, and a reclaimed fireplace will bring a balance of understated country character alongside more contemporary detailing. Outside, a courtyard garden with an outdoor kitchen will create a beautiful space for entertaining.
Where original materials could not be salvaged from the barn itself, we have sourced specialist pieces from reclamation yards to ensure the finished home feels authentic and sympathetic to its heritage.
It’s been a joy to see this project develop organically over time and uncover the beauty and character of the space. We can’t wait to see the final reveal later this year.
